Euroports has successfully completed a decade long Vectron locomotive lifting project at the Port of Hanko in cooperation with Siemens Mobility. Launched in 2016, the project involved lifting a total of 80 Vectron electric locomotives onto the Finnish railway network for VR Group.
Throughout the project, the Port of Hanko served as a key entry point for locomotive deliveries to Finland. As the port operator, Euroports was responsible for local operations, risk assessments, safety management, and coordination between port and rail activities.
The project concluded in spring 2026 with the arrival of the final three locomotives. All 80 liftings were completed according to plan and without operational disruptions or safety incidents.
“A lot has changed over the last decade but completing a 10-year project without a single incident shows that some things have remained constant. Those constants are strong and trusting relationships between business partners, the ability to find alternative solutions when challenges appear and a shared commitment to doing the job safely, professionally, and with pride.”
— Göran Eriksson, Commercial Manager, Euroports Hanko Oy
The Vectron electric locomotives represent one of VR Group’s largest railway equipment investments to date, with a total value exceeding EUR 300 million. Handling high value machinery in a port environment requires precise execution, repeatable lifting processes, and accurate timing within the delivery chain.
Euroports’ specialist expertise in complex project cargo and railway equipment handling was central to meeting these requirements. Advanced lifting equipment, experienced personnel, and well established operating procedures enabled predictable, high quality performance across multiple delivery batches.
The successful execution of the project was supported by close cooperation between Euroports and Siemens Mobility. Continuous communication and proactive coordination ensured that port operations remained aligned with delivery schedules and technical requirements throughout all phases.
“The successful handling and delivery of all 80 Vectron locomotives to Finland demonstrates what strong and reliable cooperation across partners can achieve. Euroports has been a trusted partner throughout this project, ensuring smooth and efficient logistics operations at every stage. Together, we have contributed to enabling modern, efficient, and more sustainable rail operations in Finland.”
— Juha Lehtonen, CEO, Siemens Mobility Oy
Delivered in phases over the course of the project, the locomotives have since been fully integrated into VR Group’s fleet for passenger and freight transport. To date, the fleet has completed around 72 million kilometres in operation.
The completion of the Vectron locomotive lifting project further reinforces Euroports’ position as a trusted logistics partner for demanding project cargo, demonstrating our capability to support major rail investments through safe, efficient, and reliable port operations.
